Jacky Cheung
HEARTTHROB CROONER

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jacky Cheung doesn't mess around with his fears. "As a shy person, facing an audience was a huge challenge," recalls the singer. So he entered a televised, territory-wide talent competition in 1984, breaking into the misty world of Canto-Pop by beating out 10,000 other contestants. For the record, Cheung also says he was once scared of dogs; he dealt with that fear by locking himself into a room with a Great Dane for a few hours.

Cheung, 35, is an odd, unlikely heartthrob. He is short (1.76 m) for a pinup, and some critics consider his nose too big. Compared with rival pop-music kings Andy Lau, Leon Lai and Aaron Kwok, Cheung is generally regarded as the least handsome--and consequently has the least fanatical supporters. But he has more of them than anyone else: currently the best-selling Chinese singer in the world, Cheung has recorded roughly 40 albums in the past decade that have sold more than 25 million copies worldwide. If there is a voice--plaintive and blithe--that sings to Hong Kong, it is Cheung's.

He will belt it out on July 1, crooning to assembled dignitaries with accompaniment by cellist Yo Yo Ma as they perform Tan Dun's handover symphony, "Heaven, Earth and People." He has, like his hometown, come a long way: a sailor's son, Cheung grew up in common circumstances--squeezed into a 100 sq. ft. room with his parents and two siblings (while "the rest of the apartment was occupied by at least 15 of our relatives," he adds with a chuckle). Singing won out over ships, and after the 1984 contest, which won him a recording contract with PolyGram, he quickly branched out into a frenetic, fabulously varied career. He has starred in more than 50 movies while churning out his winsome ballads. All 42 performances of his musical, Snow Wolf Lake, sold out earlier this year, and he plans to release an English album soon. Only briefly did the undisputed king of Canto-Pop stumble, tripped up by a well-publicized bout with alcohol in 1988-89. He recovered, he says matter-of-factly, because he had to: "I didn't have any skills. It would not have been easy to start another career."

Cheung applies that same unpretentious realism to Hong Kong's impending transition, which he says "has lasted so long that the handover is not special anymore." He does vow to protest publicly if Beijing proves "unreasonable." But one thing he does not fear is the future. "There is no point in having a five-year plan when the world is constantly changing and out of your control," says Cheung. "It's much better simply to step back every now and then and look at yourself and what's going on around you."
